Artwork with Electronics

Artwork with electronic components must be properly designed for long-term outdoor exhibition in an extreme four-season climate. Keep in mind we do not have indoor studio space. Franconia charges a one-time fee of $125 for artwork requiring daily electricity. Please consider the following responsibilities if you are considering making a proposal with electronic components.

• Electronics must be protected in a weatherproof enclosure that is able to withstand high winds, humidity, rainfall, snow, and extreme hot/cold temperature.
• Electronics must be properly wired. Only outdoor underground rated wire can be buried. Underground wires cannot contain any splices.
• Artists must test all hardware and software to make sure that it is error-free, requiring no maintenance.
• Internal electronics must be accessible for troubleshooting and maintenance.
• All sculptures requiring an AC outlet will be powered from 8:00am to 8:00pm. Electronic components must be able to fully start upon powering up without any manual intervention.

Living and Working at Franconia

• Fellowship artists are provided onsite housing in a 9-bedroom farmhouse.
◦ Cooking and cleaning duties are shared by all residents and are assigned on a rotating schedule.
• Studio space in the 7,000 square foot outdoor work area is shared by other artists-in-residence.
• Heavy equipment needed to produce large-scale artwork is available.
◦ Fellowship artists should expect to supply hand tools, small power tools, and safety equipment. Please plan accordingly.

Read our Residency Overview for more details.
• Franconia is a public park; Fellowship artists interact with the public on a daily basis
• Fellowship artists are expected to participate in community programming during their residency, which includes:
◦ Working at Kids Make Sculpture events in a teaching artist capacity
◦ Prepare an Artist Talk for residents and community members
• Intern Artist Assistance is available on a limited basis and at the discretion of Franconia Staff
◦ Intern artists are at Franconia on a work exchange agreement where they provide at least 5 hours of work each day to Franconia.  Within that time frame, Intern Artists spend their time working for Franconia in public programming and maintenance of the park. They are also given space and time to create their own work for public exhibition at Franconia outside of their park work obligations. Time spent supporting fellowship artists during park work hours is meant to be a professional development tool to expand intern artist’s skills and bolster their confidence. Fellowship artists who are given the opportunity to work with Intern Artists should view the experience as a mentorship.
◦ For additional information on the Intern Artist Program, please visit the Intern Artist program page.

Review Process

A panel of  jurors comprised of arts professionals will make the selection for
Franconia’s 2020 Residency Fellowships. During the review process, panelists are looking for emerging and mid-career artists or artist teams who are ambitious, self-challenging, present a professional application, and who will gain professional experience from the residency and exhibition opportunity at Franconia.

If accepted you will be expected to read the artist handbook and speak with a site manager about the logistics and timeframe of your proposed work. After your conversation with Franconia and review of the handbook, you will be asked to sign the contract that contains information on dates of your residency, contact information, display agreements, fees & expenses, and general expectations while at Franconia.

Submitting as an Artist Team

If you are proposing a collaboration between two or more artists, all involved individuals must be active and practicing artists. Please include separate cover pages, images of recent work, and resumes/CVs for each artist.

Support for Artists with Families

Too often, creative pursuits are set aside to meet the wonderful, but pressing, demands of raising a family. Franconia encourages parent artists to continue pursuing their creative passion and to apply for Franconia’s residency opportunities! Each year Franconia applies for the Sustainable Arts Foundation Residency Grant in order to make our residency opportunities more accessible and welcoming to artists with at least one dependent under the age of 18. Our goal is to financially assist artists with necessities of raising a family, for example: essential dependent care costs, childcare, enrichment programming, and/or travel costs for a family visit, etc. Please make sure to indicate your need of support on the Cover Sheet of your application as well as in your Project Budget. Any questions can be directed to info@franconia.org. Artists may also consider applying for individual awards through the Sustainable Arts Foundation. See application details here!
