24’ x 51” x 10’ Reclaimed steel, steel strapping, handmade tissue paper, marine sewing thread, chain, gold spray paint, acrylic vinyl, hand sewn seams 2019 2019 Artist Intern     Artist Statement During my time as an Intern Artist at Franconia, both of my grandmothers passed away from complications related to lung cancer. Both were women born in the 1920’s, who were shaped by the social conventions and expectations placed upon women during that time. Each woman dealt with the assumption that she would become a mother and homemaker in her own way. My grandmothers taught me to knit, to defy gendered expectations, to bake bread, to reuse Ziploc bags, and to appreciate the comedy of Lucille Ball. My work focuses on the relationships between our bodies and our social structures. My grandmothers were both assigned certain roles in life because of the bodies they were given. My grandmothers taught me that the labor of childrearing, nursing, and housekeeping that they performed were just as essential as labor that is traditionally more masculine. My work advocates for traditionally feminine forms of labor, like knitting or sewing, to be taken as seriously as any other work. This work is a monument to all the women of my grandmothers’ generation and beyond, who were or are continually belittled and underappreciated for the difficult jobs that they performed or continue to perform. This piece is dedicated to the memory of my grandmothers, Evelyn Auger and June Sanborn. Special thanks to: Raye Cordes, Joshua Fusco, Megan Koeppel, Sophia Munic, Jamie Weinfurter, and the rest of the Franconia Sculpture Park team for all of their help and support.
