Artist Statement

Resting State is a meditation on my time here as an emerging artist resident – making art, building relationships, and exploring what the park has to offer. The box was built over the  course of a month then brought to the woods on the other side of Franconia. As depicted in the  video, I rolled the box throughout several different trails, visiting some of my favorite pieces,  before landing here. The performance began at 7:00 and ended at dusk, to capture the sunset  and transition to night.

The title of the piece, “Resting State”, is a psychology reference. Several studies in recent years have been researching what brain activity occurs when not in the process of completing a  specific task. What is interesting, is that they see large differences in the areas of activity from  individual to individual. Free from work and many of my everyday obligations, I consider much of my time here at Franconia to be in a resting state.
