Artist Statement

The Dune Buggy was originally created as part of an exhibition at Homewood Studios (Minneapolis) that explored my upbringing in Detroit, Michigan. The buggy was an imagined idealized project between my father and me. Building it was an act of remembrance and reconciliation. This version uses my father’s old architectural drawings as a final coating and houses the buggy in a chicken coop reminiscent of my father’s father (my grandfather) who bred and raised chickens and had numerous handmade coops. Built with the aid of my daughters this piece encompasses four generations of my family. Designed to be partially exposed to the elements, the buggy is meant to weather and decay.
