Artist Statement

My themes are at once personal and political: the ravages of war, racism, sexism and injustice.  History is an ever-present concern in my work, especially the history of African Americans, from the days of the slave ships through the great migration north, to the heyday og the Harlem renaissance and beyond.  I am especially fascinated with how the African-American story intersects with the stories of immigrants in general, and how together these stories tell the history of the United States and the world.
