Artist Statement

Sebastian is a pseudonym adopted by Mexican sculptor Enrique Carbajal Gonzàlez, an artist known internationally for his monumental steel and concrete sculptures.  Las Puertas de Orion is a prime example of formalist sculpture, as the variation of form and surface of the twin pillars is pushed to the fore of the viewer’s experience by the monochromatic color treatment.  Las Puertas de Orion’s size and presence charges the space around it as though the process of viewing the sculpture s part of the work itself; the pillars shift in relation to each other as the viewer circles them, highlighting contrasting surface patters and negative spaces created by their proximity.
