Cocoon

Found steel, mixed media

2019 Artist Intern

Artist Statement

When I was little, my mom and I would raise monarch butterflies. We would find eggs and caterpillars on milkweed and then bring them to our backyard to our butterfly sanctuary. Often, we would stay awake late at night to watch the butterflies hatch from their cocoons. My work examines my own childhood to reconnect to the memories and objects that brought me joy. In this piece specifically, I take a step away from textile-based art and examine different materials that can convey this sense of play while existing outside.
