Steel, concrete, tractor engine

Artist Statement

As the title might suggest Drawing Machine $6… is both sculpture and an investigation in performative mark-making. Vince’s sculpture captures the monumentality of heavy machinery found at his family’s gravel pit in northern Minnesota, the place that engendered Vince’s love for enormous job sites and ambitious sculpture. The tractor that sits at the top of the sculpture contains a motor that, on the day of the performance, operated the “pendulum digger”. On the day of the performance the concrete was poured and the pendulum dragged the material back and forth while it was still liquid, making a mark in the ground. As the concrete set, the motor burnt out.
